National Tests will go ahead in Non-Govt Schools
“IEU members will supervise the NAPLAN tests in non-government schools in May,” said Independent Education Union of Australia Federal Secretary Chris Watt.
Over 50% of high school students in metropolitan areas and around 40% of all students attend non-government schools across Australia.
“The IEUA does not support a ban on NAPLAN but remains absolutely opposed to the misuse of data by some media outlets.
“The NAPLAN tests are designed to assess individual students’ achievement and provide for diagnosis and teaching/learning planning.
“The tests themselves are not the problem and indeed most schools now use the information to inform learning in the classroom and many schools have received professional development money to assist them in better addressing student needs based on data from previous NAPLAN tests.
“The IEUA supports the collection of student data through national and international tests and we support the publication of this data.
“An emphasis on literacy and numeracy are vital and essential ingredients of a ‘well-rounded’ education.
“It is critical that there is better resourcing of schools identified as needing greater literacy and numeracy support and the IEUA welcomes the money already committed by the federal government.
The IEUA will continue to work with ACARA to improve the quality and structure of information available on the MySchool website.
