“The IEUA welcomes the contribution of the Connors/McMorrow report ‘New Directions in School Funding’ launched yesterday (Wednesday 24 March)” said Independent Education Union of Australia Federal Secretary Chris Watt.
“The report’s findings are generally consistent with IEUA policy and the recent APPA paper.
“The IEUA supports funding for quality education to meet the national goals for all students irrespective of which sector those students are enrolled in.
“Over 40% of secondary students attend non-government schools and almost 50% of students attend a non-government school at some stage in their schooling.
“There is a need for a quantum shift in the way government recognizes and funds the non-government sector as part of the provision of public education in this country.
“The IEUA agrees with the analysis by Connors and McMorrow that a serious commitment by government to meeting the national goals of schooling requires more resources to be provided to schools and that no school loses money as we move forward” said Chris Watt.
“There is no question that too many schools do not have the resources to meet the needs of their students and in particular the increasing demands presented by students with special needs, including those with disabilities and those with behavioural problems.
