Opposition Proposed Cuts Not in Schools’ Interest

“The IEUA believes that the cuts to the Teacher Quality Program proposed by the Federal Opposition today are short-sighted and contrary to current educational thinking” said Independent Education Union of Australia Federal Secretary Chris Watt.

The IEUA has supported important work under the Teacher Quality Program including its principle commitments to attract, develop and retain the highest quality teaching workforce…

“There is already evidence of emerging teacher shortages and cuts to current programs could severely undermine our nation’s capacity to appropriately staff schools in the future.

“The IEUA has long supported the development of national standards for teachers and this important work is currently progressing under the Teacher Quality umbrella, said Mt Watt

“The program is also supporting important developmental work in examining ways in which highly accomplished teachers can be utilized to support and develop schools in low socio-economic areas and literacy and numeracy outcomes…

“It is extraordinary to think that in the current environment that the Opposition would cut over $1.1 billion from school programs if it were elected.”
