The IEU joins other Australian unions, and education unions around the world, in expressing our deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
This violence places civilians, especially children and families, at great risk.
We oppose all human rights abuses wherever they occur. These violations, however, cannot be used as a pretext for military actions that endanger further lives.
The IEU has long stood in support and solidarity with the people of Iran, condemning the ongoing repression of students, women and workers in the Iranian education system. Workers’ rights have been curtailed for decades under authoritarian rule, with teachers and labour rights activists facing reprisals for striking or assembling peacefully.
As highlighted by the Global Union Federations, the future of Iran must be shaped by its own people free from external military interference and internal repression.
Schools and education spaces must always be protected as safe places. Children, teachers and school communities must never be placed in harm’s way.
Our union stands with workers and communities everywhere calling for diplomacy, de‑escalation and respect for human rights.
