Federal Government Irresponsible Funding Proposal. Extorts Schools. Compromises Safety of Staff and Students

2020-04-29T11:33:30+10:00

The Federal Government’s attempt to use funding arrangements to force non-government schools into transitioning away from remote learning is divisive and destructive wedge-politics. The IEU is deeply disappointed to see education funding yet again being used as a political weapon, particularly at a time when our staff and students need consistency, clarity and support from all levels of government. We call on non-government schools to reject this irresponsible federal government proposal, which brings no new funding or support to the table, compromises the safety of staff and students and seeks to exploit short term financial concerns. We call on state, territory [...]

IEUA Calls For Respect For School Staff

2020-04-16T16:33:03+10:00

The IEUA Federal Executive has today urged school employers and governments to act with concern for and commitment to the health and safety of everyone in our school communities. Our schools and their staff have already acted professionally and capably to ensure that students and their learning are catered for during this crisis. Our members have responded magnificently to the need to ensure schools cater for the children of those workers who have nowhere else to be cared for during the day and for those children at risk in our community. In extraordinary circumstances and tight timeframes staff have developed opportunities [...]

Letter to Prime Minister

2020-03-20T09:59:06+10:00

Dear Prime Minister RE: COVID-19 In light of the unfolding health crisis and the requirement that schools remain open, the IEUA is requesting the following matters be addressed by the National Cabinet. Our primary concern is that schools cannot meet either their legislative Work, Health and Safety obligations or their duty of care to both their employees and students. In accepting the recommendations of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee governments have already committed to a range of preventative strategies including measures specific to schools.  These strategies are not being resourced and/or implemented and, in any event, they are manifestly inadequate. On this day, IEU members call for action on improving the health, education and employment outcomes for First Nations’ People. 12th Report to Parliament On 12th February 2020, Prime Minister Scott Morrison delivered the 12th Closing the Gap Report to Parliament. International Women’s Day 8 March 2020

2020-03-03T14:15:29+10:00

GENERATION EQUALITY  On International Women’s Day, IEU members are called to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, and campaign for Gender Equality.  International Women’s Day is time to reflect on progress, to call for change and to celebrate the courage and determination of the women who changed history, and those who will advance gender equality into the future. However, International Women’s Day is not simply an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilise for meaningful change.  Generation Equality is a call to action to [...]

Religious Discrimination Bill 2019

2019-09-10T10:04:36+10:00

IEUA Statement Religious Discrimination Bill 2019 5 September 2019 The Independent Education Union of Australia (IEUA) expresses its serious concerns with the federal government’s draft Religious Discrimination Bill. The IEUA is disappointed at the continuing practice of governments to polarize, disenfranchise and make a ‘whipping post’ of the rights of our members who work in faith-based education. Yet again proposed legislation completely exempts religious schools from allowing their employees the same rights that all other Australians enjoy. Here it is not the freedom to love and marry who they wish but the freedom of religion and belief itself. Religious schools don’t [...]
