IEU members will gather in Canberra on Friday, 19 September to take part in the National Teacher Workforce Roundtable
Convened by the Commonwealth Department of Education and Education Minister Jason Clare, the Roundtable will address national priorities for the teaching workforce and progress of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan developed in 2022.
IEU members, joined by Federal Secretary Brad Hayes, will contribute their first-hand experiences and insights on the complex challenges facing teachers and school leaders.
Representing their IEU colleagues are teachers Lauren (Victoria), Grayson (Queensland), Jacinta (ACT) and Catherine (ACT), who will join senior education leaders and policymakers at the Roundtable.
It’s vital that the voices of classroom practitioners are central to discussions about teacher attraction and retention. Workload and teacher burnout, staff wellbeing, teacher autonomy, respect for the profession and financial security are among the critical issues the IEU will raise on behalf of members.
While the federal government has introduced important education reforms in recent years, much more needs to be done by both governments and school employers.
No one understands the problems in education better than those working in schools. Listening to, and acting on, the expertise and advice of our teachers must be at the centre of future reforms.
