The IEUA Speaks

The Independent Education Union of Australia is the national union representing the industrial and professional interests of teachers and support staff in non government education schools and institutions across Australia.

It has a long and proud history. National registration was achieved in 1988, but the history of teachers in non government schools joining together and forming industrial unions to fight for better salaries and conditions goes back to the 1920s in a number of states.

The IEUA and its branches have been successful in developing and sustaining strong and active membership among teachers and support staff, have advanced professional and robust relationships with school employing authorities and have delivered equitable salaries and conditions across all jurisdictions to most employees.

Nationally, the union has a membership in excess of 63,000 members, representing education employees working in non-government schools and educational institutions.

Thirty three per cent of students attend the more than 2,600 non-government schools in Australia.

Right now, the challenge for the IEUA and Australia's other education unions has never been greater.
