IEU calls For Investment in the Teaching Profession on World Teachers’ Day

“Today is World Teachers’ Day and the Independent Education Union of Australia takes this opportunity to congratulate teachers across Australia - both present and past - for the vital contribution they make to the richness of Australian society,” said Lynne Rolley, Federal Secretary of the Independent Education Union of Australia.

“It is a richness which goes far beyond John Howard’s glib talk about “families never being better off during this election campaign”, she said. “The contribution of Australia’s teachers is an investment of heart, mind, body and soul!”

“The IEU calls on all governments to make an equal return investment in the teaching profession and the schools they work in, knowing that this is what the Australian community wants and deserves”, said Ms Rolley.

“The teaching and learning conditions in most Australian schools need to be lifted.  Both federal and state/territory governments have failed to properly manage workforce planning and to address proper levels of professional pay for teachers across the span of their career.”

“Governments and employers are short-sighted in their efforts to properly recognise the highly skilled work of their teachers and to provide other kinds of professional support which is the norm in other industries”, she said.

“The current group of graduates know that their training and experience will serve them well in a range of other professional endeavours without the ever-increasing demands and responsibilities of teaching. They will leave teaching – and many are now saying they will do so”, she said.

“Moreover, they will be recognised for their skills in other industries with higher levels of salary and recognition for a job well done. They will certainly not miss the teacher bashing in the media from the Prime Minister and others!”

“This is not what the community wants or needs. Parents want well-resourced schools. They want their teachers to be recognised and respected. They want the best education their taxes can buy.  They don’t want a tax cut of $10-$20”, said Ms Rolley.

“The airwaves resonate with members of the community urging governments to invest their surpluses in education, health, aged care, and the needs of our Indigenous communities to name but a few,” she said.

“Australian school communities know that teachers are part of the national treasury. In recognition of this on World Teachers Day, it is time for governments to lift the level of their investment in the profession and the schools they work in” said Ms Rolley.
