IEU welcomes new round of successful Solar Schools program

The IEU has welcomed the Australian Government's announcement of $25 million for a new round of the National Solar Schools Program.

Grants of as much as $50,000 can be used by primary and secondary schools to make their schools more energy efficient by installing "solar and other renewable power systems, rainwater tanks and a range of energy efficiency measures".

Nearly 2,900 schools across Australia have benefited from previous rounds  of the National Solar Schools Program, equating to around 14 megawatts of solar power.

This program has the flow on effect of educating students about the importance of these clean technologies to the future of our country.

Many schools have added screens which can demonstrate to students what kind of difference these systems are making to their schools energy efficiency and how their school is making a difference to climate change. Students are able to see solar panels working.

Although the majority of schools apply for solar panels, schools are able to put in an application that includes other energy effecient systems.

This is a program that has made a practical difference to schools and indeed to children.

According to the Australian Government, applications are assessed using merit-based criteria, meaning schools have to demonstrate value for money, as well as environmental and educational benefits.

Applications from schools located in remote or low socio-economic areas will receive additional weighting to allow remaining funding to be directed to schools most in need.

Applications are due 30 September 2011.

Details on the program are available at the Australian Government Climate Change Department. Schools can also contact the National Solar Schools Program hotline on 1800 703 831.
