Accomplished Teaching

 

“Accomplished teachers in Australia deserve both recognition and reward for the outstanding quality of their work” said Independent Education Union Federal Secretary Chris Watt

 

The IEUA Federal Executive endorsed policy on the recognition of accomplished teachers in September 2007.

 

 "The policy built on consultation with members, the industrial work of IEUA branches over many years, sound principles and international experience" said Mr Watt

 

“Not only do Australian students achieve at very high levels in international testing in Mathematics and Science but they receive exceptional teaching, mentoring and encouragement right across the school curriculum from academic, to vocational, sporting, cultural and artistic endeavours” he said.

 

The development of an integrated career structure for teachers that recognizes and rewards accomplished teachers should reflect the work currently underway in Australia around accomplished teacher standards, including the work of teacher registration authorities and subject associations.

 

“The IEUA’s policy details a range of underpinning principles that should ground these standards.”

 

“There has already been substantial work undertaken in developing teaching standards in consultation with teachers and validated in studies” said Mr Watt.

 

“The work underway in many States needs to be supported and resourced” he said.

 

“The IEUA and its membership will continue to be actively engaged in this work to ensure that the outcomes reflect and incorporate the IEUA’s principles”

 

The recent report commissioned by the AEU confirms and endorses the IEUA position.

 

“The IEUA looks forward to working with our colleagues in the government school sector to achieve these agreed outcomes.”
