Indigenous Education Agenda Supported

“The IEUA strongly supports the notion that education can help transform social and economic opportunities” said Independent Education Union of Australia Federal Secretary Chris Watt

“Accordingly the IEUA believes that increased resources and support are a long overdue national priority in indigenous education and the 2008 budget announcements are a welcome sign that the government is prepared to back up its Apology statement” he said.

“The IEUA applauds not just the immediate budget dollars but the longer term plan of work to ensure that the gap is closed.”

“The work of our members particularly in the Northern Territory deserves better support and more resources.  These budget initiatives are a step in the right direction”

“The fact that Australia’s Aboriginal peoples remain at the bottom level of every economic, health and social indicator is totally unacceptable,” said Chris Watt.

“Changing this must continue to be a national priority and Australians need to commit to support courageous policy to tackle together the issues that continue to divide this country and ensure that future budgets build on these initiatives and resource the indigenous education and employment targets” he said.
