International Women’s Day – More Yet to be Done

“One hundred years ago 15,000 women marched in the streets of New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights” said IEUA Federal Secretary Chris Watt.

“In 2008, while much has been achieved there is still much to do” he said.

“The fight for equal pay has not been won.”

“Some women with equal skills to men are getting a lesser deal.”

“Many Australian women workers are still without access to paid maternity leave.”

“International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress made by generations of working women and their families in the struggle for fair workplace rights, decent employment conditions and equal pay” said Chris Watt.

“It is also a time to consider the professional contribution that women educators have made and continue to make within education.”

“However, it is much more than that. This special day challenges all of us to decide what legacy we will pass on to future generations of women workers, both industrially and professionally as educators.”

“The IEU along with all Australian unions are working hard to continue the improve women workers rights at work and hand on better conditions to the next generation” said Chris Watt
