A Bouquet for School Teachers and Support Staff

“Teachers and school support staff in our schools should be commended on their commitment and skill” said Independent Education Union Federal Secretary Chris Watt in commenting on the latest ABS school enrolment figures.

“The ABS figures on school enrolments in 2007 indicate a continuing trend of increased enrolments in the non-government school sector” he said.

The ABS data shows that the non-government school sector percentage share of student enrolments in all States and Territories increased between 2006 and 2007.  Nationally 33.6% of students attend non-government schools.

“This doesn’t just happen because of a perception about the quality of education in non-government schools” said Mr Watt.

“It is a mark of the genuine quality of educational opportunity in these schools.”

“Non-government school staff, like their government school colleagues, are committed to providing educational excellence and every possible learning opportunity to their students” said Mr Watt.

“We know that school staff commit many, many unrecognized hours to their students.”

“What our members can take heart from is that the quality of their work and the caring environments that they provide are clearly sought after by the community.”
