The IEU praises ALP tax plan

Labor leader Kevin Rudd outlined a $2.3 billion plan to refund eligible families half the cost of items such as computers, internet connections and textbooks.

Families receiving Family Tax Benefit A, with one child in primary school and one in high school, could receive up to $1,125 a year back from the tax office.

Independent Education Union federal secretary Lynne Rolley says parents will welcome anything that helps them meet the cost of sending their children to school.

"The costs are pretty high," Ms Rolley said. "In a lot of schools computers are supplied but books are expensive.

"The capacity to make some claims back is obviously going to be pretty important."

However, the best way to ensure fairness and equity in the education system was to improve overall funding, she said.
